Larimar
Unique semi-precious stone from the Dominican Republic and the world

This semi-precious blue stone, privileged and exclusive to the Dominican Republic and the world, perfectly reflects the waters of the Caribbean Sea but is found deep in the volcanic mountains covered in the bowels of the Sierra de Bahoruco, Barahona Province, Larimar represents a unique attribute of beauty and peculiar variety of the Caribbean, in it, it represents the history of a specific region of the country, carrying with it an essence of water and air.

History

In 1916, the priest Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, parish priest of Barahona at that time, was the first to discover the blue rock. On November 29 of the same year, he requested a permit to explore and exploit the mine, but this was rejected since this type of pectolite was not known in the country.

In 1974, on a beach on the Barahona coast, Miguel Méndez and Norman Rilling, a Peace Corps volunteer, rediscovered larimar. The inhabitants of the area who thought that this rock came from the sea, called it Roca Azul. The few rocks they found were remains that had been washed out to sea by the Bahoruco River. After a search, the origin of the rocks was found, which became the Los Chupaderos mine. This place is the same one that the priest had found in 1916.

It is said that the name of larimar is due to one of the natives who rediscovered the stone and who combined the name of his daughter Larisa with that of the blue sea where he found the stone, forming the word "Lari-mar".

Geological Origin

Larimar is a variety of pectolite composed of an acid silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium. It appears associated with volcanic rocks (andesites and basalts) from the south of the Dominican Republic, originating in the Miocene. Although many pectolites have been found in various parts of the world, none have the coloration of larimar.

This blue color, different from that of other rocks, is the result of a substitution of calcium for copper.
